Poets Visit Grade 10s

Local poets Zuri Scrivens (’95) and CBC Poetry Prize winner Natalie Lim visited an English 10 class this month to share their poetry and wisdom. Both poets read from their repertoire and then answered very thoughtful questions from the class about writing, reading, and reciting poetry. A timely visit, as students are preparing for their own recitations!

Senior Tigers Update: January 31, 2019

JUNIOR BASKETBALL TEAM TAKES VGBA CHAMPIONSHIP
On January 24-25-26, our Junior and Senior Basketball Teams participated in the VGBA Championship hosted by Langara College. Our Seniors competed hard but lost to John Oliver,  Killarney, and Churchill. Our Junior Tigers won the Junior Division title with convincing wins over Van Tech, Magee, and St. Pat’s in the final. Mila and Finny were named Tournament All-Stars while Nadeen was named MVP.

TIGERS SKIERS AND SNOWBOARDERS DOMINATE RACES
Our YHS Skiers and snowboarders are performing well at league races at Whistler. Tigers routinely make up a large percentage of the top 10 racers. Last week Laura, Olivia, Rosie, Isabel, Lauren, and Rebecca all placed in the top 9 in the alpine ski division. While our snowboard team is small, Tash placed second. The girls have another race before zone championships. Our Tigers are defending BC Champions and are working hard to prepare for BCs in Smithers in March.

JUNIOR & SENIOR TIGERS HOST 26TH ST TOURNAMENT
In 1998, after a year of fierce competition, York House and Little Flower coaches (David Prissinotti and Debbie Smallwood) came together to plan a tournament which would bring many of the top AA teams in BC together at YHS-LFA. York House and Little Flower share a common street on Alexandra Street. However, the name, ‘Alexandra St. Tournament’ did not cut it. Both schools also share 26th Avenue. Therefore, the 26th St. tournament was born. While we all know 26th is an Avenue, but 26th St. sounded better! The rest is history. The 2019 tournament will be the 21st event organized by Mr. Prissinotti. This year, 10 teams from around BC will be competing. Come cheer on our Junior and Senior Tigers this weekend as they take part in one of BC’s best events.
