The Basement: an intimate evening of music

Our Jazz Band, Ragazza, and Bambina headlined a cabaret-style jazz evening in the Gail Ruddy Foyer. Guests had a chance to mingle, enjoy a glass of wine and sample delicious hors d’oeuvres, all while listening to jazz standards, new favourites and solo performances from our talented musicians and singers.

This evening gives our Senior students a chance to perform in a more intimate and casual setting. Traditionally this evening has been held at The Cellar Jazz Club, but since that venue closed earlier this year, Mr. Bach decided to recreate the atmosphere right here at YHS.

With the help of students, the Gail Ruddy Foyer was transformed into our very own “jazz club”. The windows were blacked out, and there were two small stages – one main stage where the Jazz Band, Bambina and Ragazza performed, and then another stage set up for the soloist showcases. There was varied seating, including couches to lounge on in the Bentley Room, and high-top tables for those who preferred to stand.

Judging from the feedback, it sounds like the event was a success. Most likely it will continue on next year, with some small tweaks by Mr. Bach. Look for it next April!

Blazer Exchange

The Blazer Exchange is a special day for both the present executive and the newly elected executive. For one group, it’s the official end to their posts, and for the other, it’s just the beginning.

This assembly is an opportunity for the present executive to say thank you and goodbye to the school community, and for us to acknowledge them for their many, many contributions to our school.

The graduating Student Executive thanked their colleagues, the student body, and their teacher sponsors for all of the support they were given throughout the year. A little advice is always imparted to the incoming Exec (this year it culminated in a 5 minute pun), and gifts and Blazers were exchanged to signify the passing of the leadership torch.

Teachers, who gave their time to work with and mentor the executive subgroups, were also thanked (Mr. Britt from the Class Presidents, Ms. Lee from the House Captains, Ms. Kaddage from the Community Service Captains, and Ms. Boteju from the Head and Vice Head Girls for her guidance of the entire team). There were a few tears, but as per usual, Ms. Ruddy was there with a quick Kleenex.
