The Ski & Snowboard team is off to a strong start, having competed in two league races so far this year. The girls are once again posting excellent results and are poised for a successful defense of their league championship.

On December 13th, Silvia was the sole female snowboarder racing on the hill. Despite a lack of competition, she had two excellent runs and won the day! Sisters Amelia and Rosie took 1st and 2nd place on the ski side, with Catarina rounding out the top three. York House took the top four spots and seven of the top 10.

Ski & Snowboard Team – January Race.

On January 11th, we had 19 racers on the hill (a record for YHS) and posted tremendous results again. Our snowboarders took the top five spots (well, there were only five snowboarders competing but…) with Joanna taking 1st place, Sophie taking 2nd, and Silvia rounding out the top 3. Our Grade 8 boarders (Cici and Selina) also had a strong first race of their YHS careers! In addition to taking 1st place at the race, Joanna has been chosen as the 1st alternate to the BC Slopestyle team for the 2015 Canada Games in February.

Our skiers again dominated, with Arizah taking 1st place, Meg taking 2nd, and Amelia rounding out the top three. The girls took the top six spots and seven of the top 10 with all our racers competing very well. In addition, Arizah and Meg would have finished 2nd and 3rd on the boys side, being bested by only one Saints racer!

The girls race again this Saturday on Blackcomb and then on the 30th of January before competing at the Zone Championships on February 16th.

Thanks for Mr. Dallman for his expert help with the snowboarders thus far in the season. See you on the hill!

A Story That Could Save Your Life

During yesterday’s Senior School assembly, Samantha, Gr. 11, shared a very scary, but important story:

A couple of weeks before the winter break there was a carbon monoxide leak in my family’s home from a crack in our boiler. We went to bed that night, having no idea about the leak as carbon monoxide is colourless and odorless. In large quantities it can be very deadly.

In the middle of the night, my sister woke up because she wasn’t feeling well. She got up to tell our parents, and fainted. The sound woke up my mom. My mom’s adrenaline kicked in. She yelled at the rest of us to get out of bed and called 911. The next thing I remember is being rushed to the hospital in an ambulance alongside my unconscious brother. We were administered oxygen and put in a hyperbaric chamber for several hours while at the hospital.

My family was very lucky. If we had been exposed to the carbon monoxide for 20 more minutes, I might not be here to tell you this story. The only way to detect this toxic gas is with a carbon monoxide detector. Carbon monoxide detectors are relatively inexpensive and can be purchased at any hardware store. I urge all of you to go home and make sure you have at least one detector on each level of your home.

It could save your life.
