For the fourth year in a row, York House students returned to Destination Imagination Global Finals in Knoxville Tennessee. York House was well represented by both a Senior and Junior team.

The senior team comprised of Anisha C., Julianna P., Katie M., Emily H. and Alex B. entered both the technical challenge and the improv challenge. The Grade 3 team, comprised of Lisa M., Chloe N., Vanessa C., Sophie F. and Zoe B., attended Globals for their first time. They also entered the technical challenge.

Senior Destination ImagiNation TeamThe improv challenge required teams to create a 5 minute play on-stage using 3 randomly selected nouns and communications methods. At the same time, the team created costumes using t-shirts and marker pens. The senior team earned the 7th highest score out of 71 teams in this challenge. They finished 16th overall in the entire challenge. This result was even more impressive given that the team is comprised of Grade 8s and 9s competing against mostly Grade 11s and 12s. The judges were particularly impressed that the team had been doing improv for less than a year when most of the teams had several years experience with this challenge.

Senior DI Team at Global FinalsThe technical challenge required teams to design and build cars using different power sources and propulsion systems. The cars then needed to travel under their own power and stop in designated zones. Both the senior and junior teams entered this challenge and felt it was an excellent opportunity to learn about power and propulsion systems.

When they were not competing, the teams were kept busy with homework, activity camps, learning creative uses for duct tape and swimming. The Grade 3s particularly enjoyed having their senior school “sisters” at the event. The relationship between the two teams was an excellent testament of the strength of the York House community.

To attend Global Finals, both teams participated at the Lower Mainland Tournament in Vancouver. Next, they competed at the Provincial Tournament hosted at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Surrey. The top 2 teams from each challenge were invited to attend and compete at Global Finals.

Both teams would like to thank their team managers, their parents and the school for their support throughout the year.

Destination ImagiNation is the world’s largest creative thinking program. Over 125,000 students participate in the program in 15 countries around the world. Teams that attend Global Finals previous finished in the top two in Regional and Provincial (or State) finals.
