Track & Field is an excellent sport for all athletes to enjoy. Whether your focus is volleyball, soccer, basketball, field hockey, or another sport, track & field practices and training helps you jump higher, run faster and more efficiently, builds endurance, and helps student-athletes with overall athletic performance. This season, the first track & field season since 2019, the YHS Track & Field Team is as strong as ever with incredible potential in the coming years. Led by our enthusiastic, talented and committed Grade 9s, our Grade 8-12 track team performed really well at our recent LMISSAA League Championship meets last week and this week, and are competing at the first-ever Vancouver Sea to Sky Zone Track Championships.

The Vancouver Sea to Sky Zone Championships includes the top performers in each event in the Grade 8 Division, Junior Division (Grade 9-10), and Senior Division (Grade 11-12) from all schools in our Lower Mainland Independent league, the Vancouver Secondary School league, as well as the North and West Vancouver leagues, Howe Sound, and Sunshine Coast. The top finishers at the Vancouver Sea to Sky Zone Championships qualify for the BC High School Championships in June.

Our track season success could not be possible without the incredible commitment of our head coach and our assistant coaches. Track & Field is a near impossible sport to coach without a team of people helping with different events. So many students are busy with other activities and track & field specialists also have practices with their club programs. Mr. Jacob Emerson is a YHS community coach. He is a recent UBC grad and currently works at the Richmond Oval and has been a huge contributor to YHS athletics for the past six years; coaching track & field as well as cross-country running. Jacob, along with assistant coaches YHS alum Olivia Uliana ‘20 and Jaxon Slaney are both UBC track & field athletes. They provide event-specific coaching five days per week before school (7:15-8:30 am) and after school (3:30-5:00 pm). Their commitment and encouragement is truly special. Combine this with the talent and spirit of so many of our YHS students from Grade 8-12, and it is no wonder our program is flourishing.

Finally, it is also important to recognize the fact that so many of our Grade 8 students, who attended our Junior School, have had an incredible track & field experience behind the leadership of our resident track and field expert, Mr. Jackson.  Mr. Jackson has been with YHS since 1998, first as a basketball coach while he attended UBC and then as a teacher starting in 2000. Mr. Jackson carried on the legacy of YHS Junior School Track excellence established by Ms. Becky Willis. We are beyond fortunate to have had that type of leadership and expertise with track & field.

TIGERS SOCCER LOSE HEARTBREAKER AT ZONES:
The Tigers Varsity Soccer Team had a great season, placing second in our LMISSAA league and along with Notre Dame and Little Flower, and advancing to the Vancouver Sea to Sky Zone Championships. The Tigers lost a heartbreaking quarter-final to Windsor from North Vancouver. Windsor jumped on top 2-0 early on and then the Tigers dominated the rest of the game and had so many great opportunities that came up short. With two missed penalty shots along with two posts and dominating in corner kicks, the Tigers lost 2-1. Windsor went on to place 3rd at the Vancouver Sea to Sky Zone Championships and qualified for the BCs. Our Tigers soccer season ended with a tough loss but the girls enjoyed a great season. Special thank you to our coaches, Mr. Lum and Mr. Bucifal. Senior Soccer season ended last week with a hard-fought game vs Crofton House. This was the first season in several years YHS was able to run two soccer teams. Special thank you to coach Mr. Williams-Walshe who led the charge with our second team and to YHS alum, Gina O’Neill ‘15 for her help.

TIGHT ULTIMATE AT VANCOUVER SEA TO SKY ZONE CHAMPIONSHIPS:
Our combined YHS and St. George’s ultimate teams, called ‘TIGHT’, competed against the top ultimate teams from the Vancouver Secondary School league as well as the North and West Vancouver leagues, Howe Sound, and Sunshine Coast. Twenty years ago, YHS-STG ultimate teams dominated in this new sport. However, with the explosion of ultimate and its sanctioning as an official BC School Sport high school sport, ultimate has become one of the most popular sports in the Lower Mainland. Schools like Eric Hamber and Sutherland are routinely provincial favourites. Our combined TIGHT team competes at the AAA level in ultimate due to the size of St. George’s population and the fact that we combine teams. Being the first season since 2019, many students are just learning the sport and competing for the very first time. The Tigers teams did not qualify for the AAA BC Championships but gained a lot of experience and continue to practice in hopes of being invited to the tier II invitational BC Championships later in May. Ultimate is a great sport and provides opportunities for the girls to compete with boys from St. George’s and against many other schools in our region that we normally do not compete against.
