Junior Tigers Update: February 25, 2021

WRAPPING UP
A sure sign that we are slowly moving towards Spring Break is the wrapping up of our Term 2 athletic teams. In the past two weeks, our Dryland Swim Team held their final training session, and both the Grade 5 and 6 Basketball Teams wrapped up their seasons. This Friday will be our final Grade 7 Basketball event, and the following week will be our final Flag Rugby practice. All things considered, it has been an excellent Winter for the Junior School Athletics program as we had fantastic participation for swimming, basketball, and flag rugby.

Thank you to each and every one of our athletes for their hard work and dedication. Kudos to our student-coaches for continuing a fine tradition of giving back to Junior School Athletics. Finally, a huge THANK YOU to all of our coaches. Whether they were a first-time coach, or a long-time veteran, each of them gave their time and passion to our students. For that we are always grateful:

  • Dryland Swim Team: Christine Lee ‘16 and Ms. Carlberg-Nangle
  • Grade 5 Basketball: Ms. Kanavos and Mrs. Rivero
  • Grade 6 Basketball: Mr. Bester and Ms. Best
  • Grade 7 Basketball: Mr. Jackson, Ms. Murray, and Michelle Kwok
  • Flag Rugby: Mr. Alguire

LOOKING AHEAD:
Spring is almost in the air, and sign-up is now open for Term 3 (Spring) Athletics. Please log in to myYHS for the Junior School Term 3 Athletics registrationSign-up will close on Friday, March 12.

Ultimate is a fun and fast-paced, non-contact, invasive game, built around movement and throwing a disc. This exhilarating game has a strong tradition in our Senior School as several alumnae have played on Team Canada in recent years. Ultimate teams are open to all girls in Grades 5, 6, and 7, and cuts will not be made. Although cuts will not be made, attendance and active participation are key to a successful experience for everyone on the team. In keeping with our athletics policy, failure to communicate, show up consistently, or participate at practice will impact participation and development.

Track & Field is a key activity for the development of fundamental athletic movements. We have a strong history of Track & Field at YHS, and we are fortunate to have wonderful student participation. Over the past many years we have averaged 100+ participants; however, the logistical challenges of organizing a season during this pandemic will force us to create a different type of experience. We have considered the many safety protocols in creating our plans, and we will continue to place an emphasis on building the students’ athletic abilities.

Junior Tigers Update: March 5, 2020

BASKETBALL:
The Grade 7 team played in the 2020 ISEA Grade 7A Basketball Tournament on February 28 at Collingwood School. In the first round game, the Tigers matched up against the Titans of Mulgrave. It was a hotly contested battle in which the Tigers dominated in all facets except the scoreboard. Even though the Tigers put up over 60 shot attempts, the Titans prevailed with a one point victory. Our next game was against Southridge, and the team played some great basketball. Alas, we could not pull out the win, and so our season came to a conclusion. We are very proud of how the team worked this year. Although our record does not reflect how much the girls improved, it is worth mentioning that our strong defensive play was noted by several other coaches. Congratulations to all of the players for their outstanding commitment and effort throughout the season.

Sign-up for our Term 3 teams is now open. If you want to sign up for either, or both, Track & Field (Grades 3-7) and Ultimate (Grades 5-7) please visit myYHS and look for the sign-up form.
