Tigers Update: Basketball Season Wraps Up & More

Senior Tigers Place 5th in BC

Senior Tigers
Senior Tigers

Wow, what a finish! After losing to the number one seeded STA Fighting Saints on Thursday, the Tigers ended their season with two big wins. On Saturday, the Seniors defeated the OK Champions from Vernon to finish 5th at the AA BC’s. On Friday, the Tigers knocked off the North Central Champions from Duchess Park who were seeded 4th. YHS entered the tournament seeded 9th and defeated three zone champions which include: #8 seed and Fraser Valley Champions from Rick Hansen Secondary, lost to the #1 seed, the Lower Mainland Championships, STA, 69-44, then beat the #4 seed (Duchess Park Condors, 72-64) and beat the #6 seed to place 5th. This is an amazing result for our girls who were ranked 8-12 all year. Never once being considered in the top 6 during the season. To exceed expectations and perform at your best when it matters most is the ultimate measure of success. Congrats to the entire team including our first year coaches, Brandon Chan and former Tiger, Jesseca Eng ’10.

Congrats to Maddy for being named to the Tournament All-Star Team.

Congrats to our Grade 8 Tigers

On Saturday, the girls lost to a big, fast and strong team from Langley, Lord Tweedsmuir and finished 4th in BC. A best ever finish for a YHS Grade 8 team.

After winning our LMISSGBA league Championship and compiling a season record of 22 wins with just 2 losses, the Tigers entered the BC’s facing the host Pitt Meadows. York House cruised to a 53-18 win. In game two the Tigers defeated Maple Ridge 28-21 reaching the final four. Then, our Gr 8 Tigers battled hard once again, but unfortunately lost to William A. Fraser. It was a close 2-4 pt game the entire way until the final three minutes when they hit a few big shots and we couldn’t answer. In our league we do not allow zone defenses but they do in the Fraser Valley and at the BCs. This was the first game this year we faced a zone defensive yet we did a very good job but it but still posed some challenges. WA Fraser went on to win the Grade 8 BC Championship.

On Saturday, playing for bronze, the Tigers were just physically outmatched by Lord Tweedsmuir. This is a talented group, but most impressive for their coaches this past week was how hard they competed. While we lost on Saturday, the girls really won the test of character. Congrats to all the girls and to Kristen for being named to the Tournament All-Star Team.

No school in BC can lay claim to the success that Sr. Tigers basketball has experienced over the past 17 years. Tigers Basketball Numbers:

  • 17 consecutive years of placing 8th or higher, 16 consecutive years of placing 6th or higher as we only came 8th once, back in 1998.
  • 16 of 17 years finishing the same or higher than they entered the tournament. One exception was 2007 when we entered as the #1 seed and finished 2nd – loss in OT in the final.

During those years:

  • 8 Championships, 1999, 20010, 2011, including 5 consecutive 2002, 03, 04, 05, 06
  • 4 silver medals
  • 11 consecutive years reaching the championship final game 2002-2012
  • bronze medal
  • 5th place in 2014
  • 6th place in 2013, 2001

More Tigers

Our skiers spent the beginning of the week at Whistler for Ski Provincials:

  • Meg finished as the 7th fastest overall skier and Arizah finished 9th;
  • Amelia and Siobhan both finished in the top 20;
  • Erin skied extremely well, finishing 8th in the Terrain GS;
  • Olivia rounded out our team with an excellent run.
  • Joanna, the lone snowboarder for YHS, had a strong run as an individual competitor in some challenging conditions.

Together the group brought home a well-deserved Silver Medal.

We have had some great results at the BC Championships this year, and three in the past week:

1st – Swim team
2nd – Alpine Ski team
4th – Gr. 8 Basketball Team
5th – Sr. Basketball Team
6th – Sr. Volleyball Team
