A Little Bit of Egypt

Gr. 7 Egyptian Children's Museum

As part of their unit on Egypt, the Grade 7’s were tasked with coming up with creative ways to entertain and engage our primary students as they visit an Egyptian museum.

Putting their imaginations to good use, they transformed their classrooms in to a little bit of Egypt.

The “museum” included: bread making, jewelry making, dressing Egyptian paper dolls, pyramids made with Rice Krispie squares, name badges in hieroglyphs, lining eyes with kohl in the style of Cleopatra and more!

Kira’s Blessings in a Backpack

Kira's Blessings in a Backpack
Kira, Gr. 7, collects backpacks for kids in need.

Kira, Gr. 7, recently spearheaded a backpack drive in our Junior School, raising 31 backpacks for the charity Blessings in a Backpack. It’s obvious that this is a cause she’s passionate about. Kira’s mom tells us that in addition to the backpack drive at school and their synagogue, she also helped sort and organize food for the backpacks. In fact, she decided on her own that she would ask family and friends to make a donation in lieu of gifts for her Bat Mitzvah, hoping to support 18 more kids in the program for the next three years. She’s obviously inspired a lot of people as at last count she raised enough to add 24 kids. Way to go Kira! It’s clear she takes great pride in living the motto “Not for Ourselves Alone.”

Here’s a note from Kira:

Dear York House Families,

Thank you so much for supporting my Backpack Drive in support of the organization Blessings in a Backpack! To remind you of what the organization does, Blessings in a Backpack is a non-profit focused on providing children at inner city schools with proper nutrition on the weekends, when they can’t rely on meals supplied at school. Every Friday, these children are given a backpack filled with sufficient food to sustain them for the weekend, which they return on the following Monday.

Our Backpack Drive was very successful and we raised 31 backpacks. I am so appreciative of your support and generosity and have delivered the backpacks to the schools involved with the program.

If you have backpacks that you would still like to donate, be it now or in the future, please drop them by my classroom (Mr. Camp, 7Y). I will be continuing my involvement with the organization and would be happy to receive backpacks at any time.

Thank you again for your support of my project.

Sincerely,

Kira T.
