More Volleyball Wins!

Sr. Volleyball: ISA Champs
Sr. Volleyball: ISA Champs

Another weekend, another trophy! The Senior team was on the Island (at Brentwood) for their ISA tournament and was able to repeat as ISA Champs for the 2nd year in a row on Saturday! While not at their best, the girls were up to the challenge of beating Crofton, WPGA, Southridge, SMU, and Brentwood (once in pool play and once in the finals on their home court).

So far this season the girls have placed 4th at UBC, 2nd at VIU, 1st in a Junior Boys Tournament, 1st at Westerns, and 1st at ISAs. Not a bad season so far!

They are now looking forward to a week of practice before playing next Monday (Nov 3rd) against St. Pats at home for the start of our league playoffs. Times will be announced next week but it would be great if we could get a strong showing as it is an important match. On Wednesday, we will most likely face off for the AA top berth in our league, and on Thursday we will play for our league championship (something we won last year for the first time!).

Thank you again for all the support and please congratulate the girls when you see them.

Jr. Model UN Wins Awards at Whistler Conference

Jr. Model UN at the VYMUN Whistler Conference.
Jr. Model UN at the VYMUN Whistler Conference.

The YHS Junior MUN Club had a great time at the Vancouver Youth Model United Nations Conference (VYMUN) in Whistler the weekend of October 24-26.

As Junior MUN is club, and not a class, students were not required to prepare in advance. Nonetheless, two students won top awards and three received honourable mentions:

  • Saskia, representing Al Jazeera, received the Best Delegate Award on the UNACJ Committee.
  • Isabelle, representing ISIS, received the Best Delegate Award on the Security Council.
  • Elsa, representing Iraq on the Interpol Committee: Honourable Mention.
  • Anna, also representing Iraq on the Interpol Committee: Honourable Mention.
  • Jocelyn, representing Singapore on the IMF Committee: Honourable Mention.

The theme of the conference was “Common Ground”, highlighting conflict resolution. The girls worked hard and learned a lot about international issues, problem solving and conducting negotiations.

A special thanks to Min Kim who helped chaperone this trip, as well as the VMUN Vancouver trip last year.
