Junior Tigers Update: September 26, 2019

VOLLEYBALL
Three weeks into our volleyball season and all four teams have played their first games. Our Grade 7 teams both traveled to Crofton House for their first league games on the season. Although the Tigers came up short on the scoreboard, the first game of the season always provides a great litmus test of where we are. This experience was no exception.

The Grade 6 team endured one of our longer road trips when they traveled to Southridge School for some exhibition games against both Southridge and WPGA. The Tigers had a lot of fun, and all teams learned a lot as they made the jump from Grade 5 Atomic Tripleball to Grade 6 Tripleball.

The Grade 5 team made the big trip out to Maple Ridge to play against Meadowridge. It is a long trip indeed, yet the opportunity to play in first our volleyball game is always exciting. The Tigers put their practice in to play, to serve, bump, and rotate around the court against Meadowridge and Stratford Hall.

CROSS-COUNTRY RUNNING
Our first race of the season is fast approaching. The Tigers Cross-Country team is participating in the Festival of Cross Country hosted by Ocean Athletics. The race will be held at Crescent Park in South Surrey. The girls have been working very hard for the past three weeks, and many of them are looking forward to the race of the season. Good luck Tigers!

OTHER ATHLETIC OPPORTUNITIES
Over the past couple of years, we have had an opportunity to develop many relationships with a few community-based athletic clubs. Last week I wrote about our relationship with Split Second Basketball. This week I would like to introduce you to  SMASH Volleyball. SMASH Volleyball is unique in the volleyball club community as they provide playing opportunities for girls of all abilities, from high-level players to an in-house league for girls who are new and still learning volleyball. Several Yorkies have found their way to SMASH over the past few years. Recently, we brought SMASH coaches in to provide coaching development to our staff coaches. The relationship has been a smashing success 🙂 If your daughter is looking for more volleyball opportunities, please visit the SMASH Volleyball website to register. In addition, you can use the code: YorkHouse20 to receive a $20 discount.

ATHLETICS EXPLAINED
Please join David Prissinotti, Senior School Athletics Director and Brent Jackson, Junior School Athletics Coordinator, for an opportunity to ask any questions you might have regarding extra-curricular athletics at York House School.

French Fashion Designer Visits Grade 11 and 12 Students

The French 11 and French Accelerated 11/12 classes had the amazing opportunity to speak with the French artist, Ghislain Brown Kossi. Ghislain Brown Kossi specializes in design, photography (including film), and painting. Over the past couple of years, he has designed his own eco-friendly clothing line made solely out of bamboo. We learned about many aspects of the fashion world such as the high-level competition, the difference between a stylist and a designer, and how significant fashion sense is in Paris: “a statement to your personality”.

Mr. Kossi was born in Lyon and grew up in Paris, embracing the on-trend French fashion community through working alongside famous designers and brands such as Chloé and Louis Vuitton. Though he was inspired by such famous designers, he chose to pursue his dream of an environmentally friendly fashion brand. The class had the chance to sample some of his clothes—they were casual and suitable for all people. The material is very soft and comfortable to wear. Mr. Kossi’s visit was enlightening in terms of the fashion community and brought a new perspective to our understanding of the dedication it takes to be in the fashion world. Thank you Mr. Kossi, we appreciated the time you took to speak with our classes!
