Field Hockey: Final Results

VARSITY FIELD HOCKEY PLACES 6th IN BC

This past week our Varsity Field Hockey Team played at the AA BC Championships hosted in Victoria at UVic by St. Michaels University School (SMUS).

This was YHS’s third trip to the AA BC’s in field hockey and we were looking to improve our best ever 9th place finish.

Our current Varsity Team had put together a very successful season thus far and qualified for the AA BC’s with a thrilling 2-0 win over LFA last week.

At the BC’s the Tigers got off to a slow start but still managed to beat Kootenay Champion, L.V. Rogers Secondary, 1-0. In game two, the Tigers dominated the play but settled for a 0-0 draw with Seycove Secondary from North Vancouver. In game three, the Tigers played the 3rd seeded SMUS Blue Jags and despite staying close, lost 4-1.

The Tigers reached the quarterfinals and had to face the #2 seeded Falcons from Crofton House (CHS). This was an epic battle and the game remained 0-0 deep into the second half with the Tigers matching CHS in scoring chances and even outnumbered them in short corners. Unfortunately, CHS scored a late goal and won 1-0.

The Tigers then moved on to defeat the Okanagan champions, South Kamloops, 2-0 and faced off with Brentwood College for 5th place. YHS has beat Brentwood in a shootout at ISA’s and at the BC’s; these two teams would again go to a shootout. Still tied after round one, Brentwood scored after a YHS miss. YHS placed 6th, an excellent result. The scores show that our Tigers are clearly one of the six best teams in BC. While the top three teams set themselves apart from the rest, our girls could push the very best right to the limit.  Collingwood beat CHS in the final.

JV FIELD HOCKEY FINISHES 3rd IN LEAGUE

This past week also saw the conclusion of the Junior Varsity Field Hockey Team season as the JV Tigers played in their LMISSAA league playoffs (Lower Mainland Independent Schools Athletics Association). After Tuesdays hard fought semi-final match and loss, the Tigers went on to beat the Little Flower Academy Gold Team 1-0 to win bronze.

Jr. Cross-Country Places Third at the ISEA Cross-Country Championship

Fifty-seven YHS Junior School Tigers, their coaches, and parent supporters gathered on the field of Quilchena Park on the morning of Thursday, October 29th. They were not alone — 14 independent schools from the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island had come together for the ISEA Cross-Country Championship.

Since the beginning of the school year, the girls were given the opportunity to attend three practices each week, and compete in various races throughout the Lower Mainland. Supported by a great team of staff coaches, and supportive families, the Tigers were given excellent conditions to be at their best for the ISEAs. October 29th was a day to celebrate and compete.

Numerous girls achieved personal bests, many received ribbons awarded to the top runners in each grade, and all gave their very best as they competed for their school. Each Tiger played an important role in scoring points for York House both during their race and as they stood on the sidelines cheering for their fellow Tigers. This team should be very proud of their third place finish — a great achievement against a highly competitive field of athletes!

In the individual grade division, the Grade 7 team (Sophie, Isabel, Sabina. and Claire) received a first place finish! Congratulations to the individual runners who received ribbons: Ruby in Gr. 3, Sophia and Madeleine in Gr. 4, Julia in Gr. 5, Sophie F. and Sophie K in Gr. 6, and Sophie, Claire and Isabel in Gr. 7.

Many thanks to the staff coaches, and for the great support from parents! Staff coaches and helpers: Kimberley Ryerson, Angela Kingerlee, and Kiera Pearkes from the Little School, Madeleine Abbott, Celine Foucher, Sheilagh Martin, Lela Ling, and Jason Camp from the Junior School, and Alison Waterhouse from the Senior School.
