Senior Tigers

The injury riddled Sr. Tigers battled hard this past weekend at the VGBA Langara Challenge winning two games over J.O. and Magee after a tough opening round overtime loss to Killarney.

In the 97-91 overtime loss to Killarney, Brianna had a career high 31 pts, joining a select few Tigers to score over 30 pts in a single game.

On Saturday, it was Gina who had a great game, recording a double double with 26pts and a career high 20 rebounds in a dominating 72-29 win over Magee. Gina came just two rebounds shy of equaling a YHS varsity record of 22 rebounds in a single game.

Brianna was named to the tournament All-Star Team. Congratulations also go to Manpreet and Sophie who earned $500 VGBA scholarships for their post secondary education.

Big Kahuna Cup – 26th St. Tournament
Feb 5, 6, 7 at YHS

The Sr. Tigers have a week off of games before they host many of BC’s best AA teams in the 17th annual 26th St. Tournament at York House, sponsored by Big Kahuna Athletic Supply.

Junior Tigers

The Jr. Tigers had a great weekend defeating Killarney, Notre Dame and then Crofton House to earn a spot in the VGBA Langara Challenge Jr. Championship game vs. Kits. The Tigers started out on fire and built a 12 pt lead but second half foul trouble opened the door to a Kits comeback. The Kits Jr.’s are all grade 10’s and led by a 6’2 provincial team player, clawed back and tied the game in the final 5 minutes. The Tigers fought hard but had to settle for 2nd place. Still a great weekend for the Tigers.

Kristen was named tot he Tournament All-Star Team.

Next up for the Jr. Tigers are their ISA Championships Jan 30-31 hosted by CHS.

Ski & Snowboard Team Off to a Great Start

Ski Team in December 2014
Ski & Snowboard Team in December, 2014.

The Ski & Snowboard team is off to a strong start, having competed in two league races so far this year. The girls are once again posting excellent results and are poised for a successful defense of their league championship.

On December 13th, Silvia was the sole female snowboarder racing on the hill. Despite a lack of competition, she had two excellent runs and won the day! Sisters Amelia and Rosie took 1st and 2nd place on the ski side, with Catarina rounding out the top three. York House took the top four spots and seven of the top 10.

Ski & Snowboard Team - January Race.
Ski & Snowboard Team – January Race.

On January 11th, we had 19 racers on the hill (a record for YHS) and posted tremendous results again. Our snowboarders took the top five spots (well, there were only five snowboarders competing but…) with Joanna taking 1st place, Sophie taking 2nd, and Silvia rounding out the top 3. Our Grade 8 boarders (Cici and Selina) also had a strong first race of their YHS careers! In addition to taking 1st place at the race, Joanna has been chosen as the 1st alternate to the BC Slopestyle team for the 2015 Canada Games in February.

Our skiers again dominated, with Arizah taking 1st place, Meg taking 2nd, and Amelia rounding out the top three. The girls took the top six spots and seven of the top 10 with all our racers competing very well. In addition, Arizah and Meg would have finished 2nd and 3rd on the boys side, being bested by only one Saints racer!

The girls race again this Saturday on Blackcomb and then on the 30th of January before competing at the Zone Championships on February 16th.

Thanks for Mr. Dallman for his expert help with the snowboarders thus far in the season. See you on the hill!
