Wigs for Kids

Ysabella & Jaques Cut Their Hair for Wigs for Kids

Did you know that worldwide, more than 160,000 children are diagnosed with cancer each year? More than a few Yorkies have decided to do something about it.

Ysabella D., Gr. 6, and our Provident Security Guard Jaques Bourassa cut their hair for Wigs for Kids during a special assembly on Friday, March 9, 2012. Mrs. Kealey and Ms. Ruddy had the honour of cutting the hair…which proved to be more difficult than it first seemed (watch the video below).

Jaques was inspired by Ysabella and the other 28 girls in the junior school who have donated their hair to Wigs for Kids. This was Ysabella’s third time growing and cutting her hair for the cause! She is donating hers to the Canadian Cancer Society. It takes approximately 12 donations of unprocessed hair and costs about $1,200 to craft a single hand-sewn wig for a child.

Kudos to the following junior girls who have also grown and shorn their hair:

Mrs. Darrell Herbert & Mr. Camp Shave Their Heads for St. Baldrick's

Speaking of hair… senior school counsellor Mrs. Darrell Herbert and junior school teacher Mr. Camp recently shaved their heads for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. They are both part of the “Young & Hairless” team that is raising money for children’s cancers. The shaving took place in the Gail Ruddy Foyer during recess on March 14.
