Danielle Helps Bring Home Silver for the Richmond Ravens

Danielle, Gr. 8, at the BC Provincial Championship

Danielle, Gr. 8, has been playing hockey since she was 5 years old. Prior to this season she played boys rep hockey at the Burnaby Winter Club, and later at the Arbutus Club. Last season she was the assistant captain of the (boys) Peewee Rep team, which won the BC Provincial Tier 4 silver medal.

This season she moved to the girl’s league, and played for the Richmond Ravens Bantam Tier 1 team. The Ravens had a very successful season, and won the opportunity to compete in the BC Provincial Championship series March 19-23 in Kelowna. After beating teams from around the Province, the Ravens won the silver medal.

Congratulations Danielle & team!

Sr. Tigers Win 2011 AA Provincial Championship

Sr. Tigers - 2011 AA Provincial ChampionsFor the 2nd straight year, and the 8th time since 1999, the York House Tigers are Sr. AA Girl’s Provincial Champions defeating the top ranked Britannia Bruins 76-56 in the BC Championship final Saturday night in Kamloops.

The Tigers entered the BC’s having lost the AA Lower Mainland final to Britannia 81-71 on February 25. The Tigers were without star point guard Cherub who suffered a shoulder injury on Feb. 5. But she was back in action this past week in Kamloops and the Tigers were firing on all cylinders as they swept the four games in Kamloops enroute to the title.

In game one, the Tigers beat the 15 seed Smithers. In game two, the North Central champions from Prince George went down. In the semi-final, the Tigers beat Vernon who had upset the Island Champions, Lambrick Park. The final was an all Lower Mainland affair pitting the Tigers against Britannia in a rematch of the AA LM final. The Tigers played Britannia five times this season taking home 4 wins.

While all the Tigers played great in Kamloops, three players were recognized by the tournament All-Star Committee.  Grade 11 forwards Mira and Laura received All-star awards while Grade 11 guard, Alisha was named tournament MVP. Somehow the committee failed to recognize Grade 11 guard Cherub who was outstanding all week – but we all know how valuable she was and another Provincial title is far more important.

This Tigers team does not include a single graduating senior. The team wrapped up a season of 27 wins to just 2 losses which inlcude four wins in Las Vegas over the winter break and wins over many of the top 10 AAA teams. The Tigers have been to 14 staight BC Championships, to 10 straight Final Four appearances, 11 Final Four appearanced since 1999, 10 straight final game appearances and 8 championships, 3 silver medals and 1 bronze. An amazing run that led to The Province’s Howard Tsamura calling us “the most dominant program in all of BC high school basketball”.
