Junior Tigers Update: February 17, 2022

BASKETBALL
The past several weeks have seen our JS basketball teams in action multiple times. The Grades 7A team played against Mulgrave (W), CHS (L), Southpointe (L) and Collingwood (L). The team is defensively very strong, and as our offensive skills continue to grow, the group of players will be very difficult to play against. The Grade 7B team has enjoyed quite a bit of success on the hardwood. They also played Mulgrave (W), CHS (L), and Collingwood (W). This team is quite fast and athletic and they attack the hoop very well. Both teams are fun to watch as they play with a lot of enthusiasm. Both teams played their final game of the season yesterday at Southridge, and they will be finishing their season early next week with an intra-squad Basketball Survivor session.

Our Grade 6 and Grade 5 teams have both hosted games and participated in away games. The teams are learning the basic rules and putting into practice the nuances of basketball. At times, developmentally basketball can be frustrating with offensive skills lagging behind defensive skills. Yet, both teams have posted several wins, and we are looking forward to their continued development. Grade 5 and Grade 6 basketball teams will wrap up their seasons this week with an end-of-season event during their final practice.

SWIM TEAM
The Swim Team continued to churn out laps for the past month, and they wrapped up their season this week. Although it was a shame we could not arrange for an official swim meet, our coaches have done very well to provide the team with a season-ending intra-squad meet. The time trials began last week and finished up yesterday. Despite the lack of competition, the team had a very successful season due, in large part, to our outstanding coaches. The team of coaches is led by Christine Lee (‘16) and Alex Kouzas. Between the two there is over 20 years of coaching experience. They also do very well to incorporate and develop our Senior School student coaches. Thank you, Miss Alex and all of our student coaches (Janice T., Sienna S. Tristan Y., Madeleine W., Ruby F., Lauren C., and Samantha H.) for a tremendous season.

SWIM COACH – CHRISTINE LEE ‘16
Unfortunately for our young swimmers and our program, this looks to be Christine’s final year with us. After joining our Junior School Team as a Grade 3 (way back in 2006), she never left. Now, after 16 years, she is moving on to a new job and new challenges. We will greatly miss her passion for swimming and the YHS program. She was an amazing supporter of our young athletes. A huge thank you to Christine for all that she has given to YHS! We wish her nothing but the best as she continues her journey.

Junior Tigers Update: January 13, 2022

BASKETBALL
All four of our Junior School teams have returned to the gymnasium this week. Recent updates from provincial bodies, including ViaSport and BCSS, allow for games to continue as long as it only involves two schools (teams). Any events or tournaments involving three or more teams are currently suspended. Next week, each team is scheduled to play, and we are looking forward to seeing our athletes in action. Unfortunately, the current restrictions do not allow spectators at this time.

FLAG RUGBY
Thursday marks the beginning of our second consecutive year of Flag Rugby. It seems our Tigers are very excited to throw the ball around with Ms. Scrivens, and we are all looking forward to another great season.

SWIM TEAM
The Swim Team was back in the pool this week. The team is strong, and our coaches are very much looking forward to watching the continued progress of our swimmers
