The YHS Community came together at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts (UBC) for the annual Celebration of Community. This year, the festive concert featured songs through the decades in tribute to the school’s 80th anniversary.

There were many great moments throughout the concert, including a surprise flash mob from the senior girls. The grand finale featured a mass choir with 350 singers from Grades 3-12. Students worked with award-winning and internationally renowned composer, choir director, and performer, Brian Tate, to perform his song “We Are One“. Spirit of Giving: Jr. Candlelight Assembly

The Junior Candlelight Assembly is a celebration of songs and readings led by the Grade 7 students. It includes lighting of candles for Joy, Faith, Hope, Love and Peace.

The service focuses on giving. Gr. 1-3 students bring an unwrapped toy for children who are in the Emergency Foster Care Program. Gr. 1-4, along with YHS staff, are assigned a family in need through the Family Services of Greater Vancouver. Eight families were the happy recipients of gifts, gift cards and everyday necessities – anything a family would need to make a special Christmas at home.

At the start of the service, each class brings their holiday hampers and gifts to place under the tree. Jr. Head Girl Anna said, “as I walked through the halls of this school I couldn’t help but be proud of the overflowing hampers full of surprises for Christmas morning.”

Vice-Head Girl Saskia closed the assembly reminding us what this time of year is really about: “giving doesn’t always come in boxes, it can come in anything –  a hug, a smile, or just getting someone’s pencil case for them.”
