Senior Tigers Update: October 4, 2018

TIGERS FALL SPORTS UP & RUNNING
Tigers athletes are up and running this fall with some great results.

Senior Volleyball ranked AA #1 in BC:
Our Senior Tigers had a great season last year winning the AA Lower Mainland Championships and placing 5th at the AA BCs. While they graduated two great players, Maddie and Gabby, the roster is as strong as ever and they were recognized as the #1 ranked team in AA in the preseason rankings. York House opened their season with a 3-1 win over WPGA and a strong finish last weekend at UBC Tournament. This weekend they play at Trinity Western University Tournament.

York House is also pleased to run a Grade 8 Team, Junior Team and Junior ‘B’ Team. This allowed all girls who tried out for volleyball teams to be placed on a roster and play volleyball for YHS. Our Junior Tigers won their first four games of the season defeating CHS, St. Pat’s, STMC, and Notre Dame.

Cross-Country Running:
Our runners have competed at two LMISSAA league meets. Both events were in the sunshine and our girls competed hard and ran well. More results will be reported in the coming weeks.

Field Hockey:
Once again YHS has three full field hockey teams (Junior, Senior, and Varsity). All teams have been very active with our Varsity Team playing in a recent Polar Bear Tournament as well as defeating a touring Australian Team from All Hallows School in Brisbane. YHS families provided a homestay for the girls for two nights. From all the feedback I have heard, it was a great experience all around. The Varsity Tigers also tied LFA 1-1 in our first league match. Our Senior Team played in the UBC Tier II tournament and won bronze medals. This week they won their first league game 4-1. Our Junior Tigers played in a tournament hosted by LFA and this past week, won their first league game 2-0.

Swim Team:
Our first swim meet is scheduled for October 4, at St. George’s. Our Swim Team has been training hard at their morning practices in preparation for the season.

Oct. 22-30 is National Coaches Week:
Every day coaches take on enormous responsibility. Coaches manage a large team of diverse student-athletes with varying skills, knowledge, commitment, and athleticism. They give hours and hours before and after practice/games as well as the time on the court, field, trail, track, etc. Everything coaches do is public. They constantly face challenges and tough decisions and while not everyone is always happy with decisions, they do so with the long term best interests of the team in mind. It sounds like a tough job. Maybe that is why so few step up to take on this important role. #ThanksCoach!
