The Gift of Reading

Jr. Library Helpers Prepare Gift for Each One Teach One
Jr. Library helpers prepared gifts for Each One Teach One participants

The YHS  Junior Library helpers recently prepared presents for the students at Queen Alexandra, and Admiral Seymour, who are tutored by our senior school students in the Each One Teach One program. Each received a book that has been beautifully ribboned with Twizzlers on top! We are giving these books to the children at these schools because not all the children have an opportunity to own their own books. We are happy to help them to experience the wonderful joy of reading!!!

Young Spies Meet Vancouver Police Officers

Spy Club for Young Spies with VPD Officers
Spy Club for Young Spies with VPD Officers

SPY CLUB FOR YOUNG SPIES had a visit by two Vancouver Police Officers, Emily Ewens and Fiona Ford.

These are some of the questions we asked them:

Why did you decide to become a police officer?
I played a lot of team sports especially hockey. I loved being part of a group so I thought being a police officer would be fun. I could solve crimes with a team!

Have you ever had to chase down a suspect and handcuff them?
YES! There were three people in a school grounds we were chasing. Two stopped and the other one did not. When we caught him we cuffed him.

(The Police Officers chased down Mrs. Martin in the library and caught her with scissors in her socks!!!)

How would you handle a riot situation like the one after the Stanley Cup final?
There are special people for those situations who come out in special suits with special equipment.

How long does it take to solve a case?
It depends. I was working on a murder case and it still is going on after five years.

What was it like to go to a murder scene?
Let’s just say there was a lot of blood.

When are you allowed to draw your gun? And have you even had to draw it?
I haven’t actually had to use my gun except to warn someone to back off. We can use out baton to warn people too.

What is the funniest thing that has happened to you on the job?
My partner and I were driving along one day and we saw some person with half their body sticking out of a clothing donation box. So we stopped and pulled the person out and asked him, “What were you doing?!” We let him go!

How do you get to an emergency quickly? What kind of calls are emergencies? And which ones are not?
There are codes for emergencies. When we get a call we know which codes are the most serious crimes. Then we put on our gear and go!!

What is the hardest part of being a police officer?
It is mostly how hard it is to stay healthy. We sometimes work at night and sleep in the day. So that is hard.
