International Women’s Day Walk

On Friday, March 4th, our Community Service Team organized a “Community Day” in honour of International Women’s Day. All students, faculty and staff participated in the Community Day, which included a fundraiser for Care Canada and a reflective walk.

Just prior to the walk, the Senior School held an assembly which featured a reading of Audre Lorde’s poem “A Litany of Survival”, and an original work by Tammy, Gr. 10, called “What Does it Mean to Be a Woman?” Following the assembly, the whole school warmed up on the field. The Grade 11 and 12s were once again paired up with their Grade 1-3 “buddy” for the walk.

Watch the video below from Care Canada to see why we are “walking in her shoes”.

YHS Parent Fun Club at Soup Sisters

FB_IMG_1454567087891On Thursday, January 29th, 20 YHS parents gathered at the Northwest Culinary Academy of Vancouver, for an evening of soup making for Soup Sisters.

There were six prep stations and together the group sliced and diced 500 servings (112 litres) of various types of soups. The destination for the soups was Sereena’s House for Women, a housing development and support program for women in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Jacquie, Sereena’s Manager, explained the value of Soup Sisters to her program and explained how Sereena’s House works. The goal of their program is to provide a supportive environment in which women are assisted in their efforts to live independently, free from violence, abuse, and substance use, to have access to community services and to become involved in their community.

We had a blast, made new friends, learned a few tricks of the trade and were served a delicious soup prepared by one of the chefs from the culinary school. Stay tuned for another Soup Sisters outing this coming fall.
