Tigers Enjoying a Banner Year

YHS enjoying the best ever season in high school sports

The highly coveted title of Provincial Champion is something that doesn’t come along every year. To win a BCSS sanctioned Provincial Championship is a major highlight for any BC school.

Since 1999, York House had enjoyed many BCSS sanctioned titles which included 7 in AA basketball and 2 for alpine skiing.

Nine ‘blue banners’ in 12 years is a great feat.

The 2010-11 school year is one for the record books at YHS with three Tigers teams winning BCSS sanctioned Provincial Championships in one school year.

November 2010: Tigers Swim team took home the Girls Aquatics Championship.

March 2011: Tigers Alpine Ski Team won our 3rd Skiing Championship.

March 2011: Tigers Varsity Basketball Team won the AA basketball championship for our school’s 8th AA basketball title.

It has already been an amazing year for Tigers teams as it is doubtful any school in BC, has won three BCSS championships this year.

Two girls, Ava and Christina, both Grade 11’s, were a part of two winning teams; the Swim Team and Sr. Basketball Team.

With spring sports still ongoing, the Tigers do have a good shot at the BC Ultimate title but ultimate Frisbee is not a BCSS sanctioned sport as not enough schools in BC compete in ultimate. Therefore, if the Tigers ultimate team does win, we can celebrate a 4th BC championship but it will not be a BCSS sanctioned event and not come with the highly coveted ‘blue banner.’

Tigers Ski Team Provincial Champions

YHS Ski Team - BCSS Provincial ChampionsYork House Ski Team have just won the 2010-11 Provincial Championships in Kimberley, BC. For the first time ever, York House has won 2 BCSS Provincial Championships in one school year (our swim team took home the championship banner in November).

The girls were amazing and I can’t say enough about their skiing, behaviour and maturity (hard to believe with all grade 8’s except for 2 grade 9s!). The girls managed to bring the banner home after 2 years away. They defeated a very talented Seacove team by 10 points (quite a lot in skiing) and got their revenge for a 1 point loss last year.

Our snowboarders had a challenging championship as they were dealing with a whole lot of new experiences and nerves. Both Silvia and Joanna learned a lot and despite being very inexperienced, managed to represent the school very well and have a bright future ahead of them.

Thanks to all of you for your support of the team and the girls. A large part of the team is now racing for their club team in Panorama – they will be tired when they return!

Emma – 3rd overall skier in BC

Siobhan – 6th overall skier in BC
