2010 Provincial Champions

BC Swim Team Champions 2010-2011Congratulations to our Senior Swim Team as they accomplish what no YHS swim team has ever done, win the BCSS Provincial Championships.

Head Coach, Scott Abt, along with Assistant Coach Abbie Au ’07, led a team of 17 swimmers from grade 8-12 to Nanaimo, BC on Nov. 19-20. The YHS Swim Team consists of 29 members but these 17 girls qualified for the BC Championships. Knowing we were a top 5 team, the Tigers had some pressure on them to perform. They also had to deal with very strong competition from much larger schools such as Claremont, Mount Douglas, Oak Bay, Elgin park and Earl Marriott.

The scoring was close all day Saturday until the final 2 relays where the Tigers psuhed their point total to 308 and won the title convincingly 308-265 over Victoria’s Claremont. In the overall catagory, the Tigers placed 6th overall agasint schools that scored girls and boys points.

The Tigers were led by grade 12 standout, Laura. Laura won the gold medal in the 100m Free and led 3 relay teams to strong performances adding a silver and bronze medal to her haul. All 17 girls scored points in the win. It was a complete team effort.

Congratulations to all the girls and their coaches. This is YHS’s 10th BCSS Provincial Championship banner since 1999. This is a remarkable accomplishment for a school our size. YHS has two BCSS Championships in Alpine Skiing and seven in AA Basketball. This year, our Ski Team and Basketball teams will be in the running for their respective titles. Of course, we have also won Ultimate BC Championships but ultimate is not a sport sanctioned by BCSS and they do not oversee ultimate provincial championships.

Our Sr. Tigers Swim Team entered the Vancouver-Richmond Zone Championship Meet as the favourites and did not disappoint.  Led by grade 12 star, Laura Sze, the Tigers dominated the event easily winning the girl’s title and placing 2nd overall to St. George’s.  York House qualified 17 swimmers to compete at the BC Aquatics Championship to be held in Nanaimo, BC, November 19-20.  York House finished 2nd overall on the girls side last year and this year hope to equal that mark and perhaps take home the highy coveted BCSS Provincial Championship.
