Senior Tigers Update: April 21, 2022

On Wednesday, our small but mighty Tennis Team competed at the ISA Championships at UBC against various ISA schools from around BC. YHS defeated Victoria’s SMUS in the final to win the ISA title. Congratulations to all our tennis players and to our coach, Mr. Bester!

Tennis in BC High School Sports is a co-ed sport. Unfortunately, St. George’s pairs with Crofton House, and Vancouver College pairs with Little Flower. YHS has no boys school to pair with. As a result, we can not compete in our local leagues, Zones, and BC Championships. We can, however, play some exhibition matches and compete at the ISA Championships where boys and girls are separated at different Boys ISA Tennis and Girls ISA Tennis Championship tournaments. Today, we took home the hardware!

Congrats to Lily, Emily, and Sophia in Grade 8, Grace and Shira in Grade 9, Bella, Elly, and Pamela in Grade 11, and Jessica in Grade 12.

Senior Tigers Update: April 14, 2022

SPRING SPORTS
The first spring high school sports season since 2019 is off and running. It is one of the busiest seasons we have had in terms of the number of teams and percentage of Senior School students involved.

Spring Sports include:

The SENIOR ULTIMATE TEAM is off to a great start with wins over St. John’s and Fraser Academy and a close 8-7 loss to Stratford Hall. Stratford are routinely one of the top ultimate teams in BC. Ultimate is a co-ed sport and YHS combines players with St. George’s to form our team called “TIGHT”; a name based on Tigers and Knights. The Senior Team is our most competitive team with the top players at YHS from Grades 10-12.

The JUNIOR ULTIMATE TEAM also combines with St. George’s and includes students from Grade 8 to Grade 12. The Junior Tight team provides the first high school ultimate experience for our younger students.

The VARSITY SOCCER TEAM is our most competitive YHS team including players from Grade 9 to Grade 12. The Tigers are off to a great start with a 2-1 win over Little Flower Academy in their first game of the season and followed that with a 7-0 win over St. Pat’s. YHS have more upcoming league games as well as ISA Championships, April 22-23, in Victoria, BC.

The SENIOR SOCCER TEAM includes any players Grade 8 to Grade 12 who are not on our Varsity Team. This year’s Senior Team is in fact a Junior Team of students from Grade 8 to Grade 10.

The TRACK AND FIELD TEAM is off and running with a wide range of event training sessions and practices throughout the week. We are fortunate to have the generous commitment of three community coaches, led by Mr. Jacob Emerson, which provides many options for our busy student athletes. Track meets run on Wednesdays at Swangard Stadium, and in May, our athletes will compete in a range of events. April 13 was our first LMISSAA league meet and it was the first ever high school meet for many of our students. They had fun competing and spending time together at the track.

Our BADMINTON team practices Tuesdays and Thursdays after school with weekly matches at YHS on Tuesdays. Badminton is a co-ed sport in BC but YHS is unable to combine with St George’s or Vancouver College as those schools have long time commitments to Crofton House and Little Flower. YHS Badminton competes in weekly matches against other LMISSAA school’s female players. The YHS Badminton Team does not advance to the Zone championships or BCs.

A group of YHS TENNIS players have practiced for a few days and will represent YHS at the ISA Tennis Championships on April 20 at UBC. Like badminton, tennis is also a co-ed sport in BC and is unable to combine with St George’s or Vancouver College as those schools have commitments to Crofton House and Little Flower. YHS Tennis competes at the ISA Championships only and can not advance to the Zone championships or BCs.
