Amabel takes 3 medals. YHS finishes 8th in BC.
The most successful season in Tigers history came to a fitting close Saturday, June 4 at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby as the final event of the year was won by our Tigers 4x400m relay team. The Tigers took home gold in a YHS record smashing time of 3:57.21.
This is the first Women’s Open Provincial Championship gold medal in the past 20 years at York House. The last known gold medal was *Camille Noel’s BC record 400m win back in 1989.
This year, the Tigers team was led by standout Amabel whose day at the track was nothing short of inspiring. She won a silver medal in the 400m running a personal best of 55.66, and was also 2nd to 3 time BC Champion, Katie Ried who is one of the very best 400m runners in Canada. Amabel then went on to win bronze in the 200m running yet another personal best of 25.13.
The Tigers 4x400m relay team consists of Isabella, Megan, Emma, Amabel and Katie. Katie was sick and away from school so Megan filled in. Their qualifying time of 4:02 put them as the #1 seed and was a new YHS record. Knowing the other teams would adjust and change runners, the Tigers goal was to get under 4:00 for the final. If they could they felt they could win gold.
Isabella had a great start and ran a 60, Grade 8 Megan stepped up and ran a terrific 63. Emma ran a personal best of approx. 59 and set the stage for the fastest girl on the track, Amabel. Amabel recieved the baton about 15m behind Walnut Grove, last year’s winner. Amabel reeled her in on the back stretch and passed her on the corner. It was an amazing race that ended with the Tigers winning by 5m and improving on their Friday time by almost 5 full seconds.
Congratulations to all girls and to the coaches Mr. Jackson, Megan Kwan’09 and Natalie Liu’08!
*Camille Noel still holds the BC record in the 400m. She left YHS for grade 10 to McRoberts (then Magee) for Grade 11 and 12.
