Look Who’s 80!
York House celebrated a very special birthday last week. Every September we recognize Founders’ Day, honouring the seven women who opened the school during the Great Depression, with only 17 students.
It was a full day, starting with mini-birthday cupcakes, courtesy of the Alumnae Association (baked by a Yorkie mom). Watch the Little School and the Junior School sing happy birthday to YHS:
After touring the campus, alumnae from 1932 to 1962 attended the Golden Alumnae Luncheon. The highlight of the afternoon was a special fashion show curated by Archivist Susannah Smith. “Berets & Blazers” featured the evolution of the YHS uniform, from the 1930’s to present day. The fashions were modelled by junior school students:
The theme of “Berets & Blazers” carried on to the Founders’ Day Assembly. Head Girl Andrea and junior school students shared their thoughts on the YHS uniform. Margaret (Shepard) Walwyn and Barbara (Sanderson) Armstrong, from the Class of 1955, also reflected on the uniform from their days at YHS (bloomer inspections!):
The assembly also included a ceremony where the Class of 2013 was inducted into the Alumnae Association. The Grade 12’s were presented with their membership pin. The Berets & Blazers fashion show was presented once again for all the students to enjoy, as well as two musical performances: our Senior Choir performing “Unto the Hills” and the Grade 4 Choir performing the school march:
