Three Yorkies achieved some very good results at the 2015 Canadian Youth Chess Championships (CYCC) — the most distinguished youth chess competition in Canada. Held in Windsor, Ontario from July 6-9, children competed to be the official Canadian representatives at the World Youth Chess Championships, to be held in Greece this fall. The standard of chess at this national tournament is extremely high and both Annika, Gr. 7 and Pepi, Gr. 8, faced WCMs (Women Candidate Masters with 2000+ ratings, Grandmasters have 2500+ points).
Results from the CYCC:
Veronica, Gr. 2, placed 3rd in her first CYCC, playing in the Under 8 Girls — a super result.
Pepi, Gr. 8, volunteered to move up a section (to provide enough people in that section and ensure the top player would be sent to Greece, even though it was unlikely to be her). She placed 6th in the U16 Girls, and was awarded Top Junior for being the youngest in that section — by a long shot!
Annika came 8th in the Under 14 Girls. She received very commendable points in the largest of the three sections, with some very strong play.
Thanks to the CYCC for hosting the event. Well done Veronica, Annika and Pepi who played very strongly and were terrific throughout four long days of competition.
