Senior Tigers Update: March 7, 2019

SKI TEAM PLACES 2ND AT BC CHAMPIONSHIPS
Our Tigers skiers and snowboarders are returning from Smithers, BC with silver medals and a second place finish at the BC Championships. The Tigers lost a close battle with Collingwood who took home the coveted championship banner.

It was an extremely competitive field, but the girls held their own. They were responsible, exemplary athletes and a joy to be with the entire time. Lots of success, but here is a shortlist of individuals:

Laura, Gr. 9 – 1st in GS and 3rd in the combined overall GS/Terrain
Rosie, Gr. 12 – 1st in Terrain GS
Tash, Gr. 10 – 8th in GS and 7th in Terrain GS

Big thank you to our coaches, Mr. Lum and Ms. Matthews. Special thank you to Russell and Gillian for all of their help and support!

JUNIOR TIGERS BASKETBALL PLACED 9TH OUT OF 24 TEAMS

This is the second best placing ever for Junior Tigers (YHS placed third in 2009). The Tigers had a great tournament:

  • Game 1 was a tough opening round loss to a very big Fleetwood Park team. YHS led for three quarters but couldn’t hold the lead and Fleetwood took control in the 4th quarter. The opening round loss was devastating and immediately dropped the Tigers out of the top 8. The best they could now do was 9th place.
  • Game 2 they showed a lot of resilience to bounce back after the loss by beating Belmont 50-38 behind Finny’s 20pts—she was Player of the Game.
  • Game 3 was a battle with one of the toughest programs in the province, Brookswood. The Tigers handled the intense defensive pressure and led throughout the game building a 20 pt lead and holding on to win 55-44. Nadeen led the way with 22 pts and was Player of the Game.
  • Game 4 was to determine the ‘showcase bracket’ champion (final placings 9-16). The Tigers faced their league rival St. Thomas More Collegiate (STMC) and they were not going to let STMC end their season with a loss. YHS took control building a convincing 41-15 lead through three quarters. The Tigers held on for the win behind Avery Ratcliffe’s 17 pts and Player of the Game honours.

The Tigers did very well! Especially considering the challenges they faced with injuries to several players during the season and playing the BCs without three players. Also, consider that there is no A, AA, AAA in Junior basketball. This is 9th place among all 300+ registered Junior Basketball teams in BC! YHS is AA size school and our Junior Tigers were the top placing AA sized school.

Congrats on a great season!

Final Top 10 Placings:

  1. Terry Fox
  2. Kelowna
  3. Riverside
  4. M.E.I.
  5. Okanagan Mission
  6. Claremont
  7. Yale
  8. Fleetwood Park
  9. York House (Showcase Bracket Winner)
  10. St. Thomas More Collegiate

TABLE TENNIS TAKES PROVINCIAL GOLD & SILVER

Grade 5 Parisian Café

On February 28th, a nice smell started to come all the way up to the Junior School. What was that? It came from Mira’s kitchen where Mme Céline was baking croissants. It was time for the “Café-Théâtre”, the famous Grade 5 French show that every family looks forward to!

The Grade 5 parents were invited to join their daughters in the Bentley Room, which was turned into a Parisian café with lovely accordion music playing in the background to set the mood. A team of waitresses were ready to serve food and drinks en français before the parents enjoyed watching a play in French called “Un frère pénible” (an annoying brother). It was so much fun for the girls to serve their parents and to see everyone socializing with a bit of French in the air! The girls then surprised their parents by singing “L’oiseau et l’enfant”, an award-winning song about how wonderful the world is. The singing was beautiful and the parents loved it. What a great show! It can’t get better than this beautiful performance. Well… it did! The girls had made a funny Kahoot quiz to test their parents’ French. Kahoot is an interactive and competitive quiz that we use in class for learning. You should have seen the families competing against each other and getting hooked on this game!

Thank you for all the Grade 5 students for making this show so memorable. Hard work always pays off.
