Ally Week: Sign the Pledge

Ally Week
Sign the pledge in the cafe and pick up a rainbow sticker or ribbon.

This week is Ally Week, and our GSA is doing a few things around the senior school to create awareness about the importance of being an ally. Rainbow ally stickers are available in the caf at lunch at lunch, and all students and staff are invited to sign the Ally Pledge.

The following video from TD Canada features LGBT employees and their allies sharing stories on experiencing bullying in their youth, and sharing their message of how it gets better:

What is Ally Week?
Ally Week is a week for students to identify, support and celebrate Allies against anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) language, bullying and harassment in schools.

Sudents and staff are encouraged to sign an Ally Pledge which states:

  • I believe all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression,
  • deserve to feel safe and supported. That means I pledge to: Not use anti-LGBT language and slurs;
  • Intervene, if I safely can, in situations where other students are being harassed;
  • Support efforts to end bullying and harassment.

The following music video was played during Monday morning’s assembly, and has a great message. Watch “Same Love”:

What is an Ally?
We refer to Allies as people who do not identify as LGBT students, but support this community by standing against the bullying and harassment LGBT youth face in school. Allies can be straight or cis gender identified youth and adults, or LGBT identified adults! Anyone who takes a student against anti-LGBT bullying and harassment can be an ally.
