It’s been a three long years since the last provincial championship in 2006. Three years of winning silver medals – still a tremendous accomplishment – but the 2010 York House Tigers had set their sights on a championship. On Saturday, February 28 in Kamloops, the Tigers did just that, reclaiming the AA Provincial Championship and bringing home the blue banner for York House’s 7th AA title, more than any school in BC.
This Tigers team amassed a record of 39-4 over the season winning the ISA title, the 26th street title, the LMISSGBA ‘league’ and ‘playoff’ title and the AA Lower Mainland title. They qualified for our 13th consecutive trip to the BC’s (unmatched by any school). In Kamloops, they easily defeated the 16 seed Mt. Elizabeth, the 8 seed Holy Cross of Surrey, and the 5 seed NVSS of Prince George. As expected, the Tigers faced the Okanagan Champions, Clarence Fulton Maroons of Vernon who have the best player in BC in 6’2″ Cassandra.
The final game was one of the best games I have ever seen. It was a showcase for girls’ basketball with a fast pace, great skill and incredible shooting percentages. The Tigers led early 22-12 as Roya made her mark leading the Tiger charge. The second and third quarters tightened as Fulton settled in and shot an incredible 57% from the field. Some fouls and tough calls slowed the Tigers, but Jesseca provided consistent leadership and scored big baskets when needed to help maintain a small lead. The fourth quarter was intense as a York House 7 point lead dropped to 3, then to 1 and Fulton took a 1 point lead with just two minutes left. That lead was short lived, as the Tigers responded with Chantelle scoring a big basketball. With incredible contributions from everyone, including energy and support from our deep bench, the Tigers retook the lead, led by Alisha who scored our final 6 points. Up by 3 points in the final seconds, Alisha scored two clutch free throws to seal the win for York.
Final Score: York House Tigers 79 C. Fulton 74
