WINTER SEASON PREVIEW

BASKETBALL:
This week, basketball is underway, and the season looks promising.

Grade 8 Tigers: Each year our former Grade 7s mix with several students new to YHS, which means our Grade 8 Team is always a bit of a surprise. This year the team looks promising with an enthusiastic group of girls.

Junior Tigers: Our Junior Team is made up of several Grade 9s who won the BC Championship last season as Grade 8s. Combined with some key Grade 10 players, our Junior Team is strong. We expect to be competing among the best in BC and will play some very exciting basketball.

Senior Tigers: Our Senior Tigers are made up of many experienced and committed Grade 12s and some very talented Grade 11s. The Tigers will compete at ISAs in early December, the VGBA Tournament in mid-January, and host our 26th Street Tournament in February.

SKI & SNOWBOARD:
YHS looks to continue to dominate the slopes in our local zone meets and will be working hard to defend our 2017-18 BC Championship title.

Junior Tigers Update: November 22, 2018

GRADE 5 and 6 BASKETBALL
Our Grade 5 and 6 Basketball teams have both begun practising. The teams meet early in the morning and they are already making good progress. A big thanks to our coaches for their early season dedication and organization:

  • Grade 5 – Mrs. Kanavos, Mrs. Zimmer, and Mr. Lee
  • Grade 6 – Ms. Abbott and Ms. Garcia

The girls have an opportunity to sign up for several games before the end of season playday. The early season games give the girls a chance to measure their skills and compete against other schools. The games are also an excellent building block that provide a lot of learning opportunities. The first Grade 5 game is December 17th, and the first Grade 6 game is December 4th. Good luck teams!

GRADE 7 BASKETBALL
With so many Grade 7s playing basketball, we have been able to create two teams. YES! This is a much better experience for the girls as everyone will receive far more playing time and opportunities for development. Each week we have two practices and our teams spend a fair amount of time with both coaches (Mr. Jackson and Mr. Bester). The two teams play in separate leagues, battling for league supremacy and then wrap up their seasons at their respective tournaments on February 22nd. The real action begins this weekend with our Grade 7A team participating in the SJS Slam Tournament. Both teams with have home court action on December 4th, mark it in your calendars.

GRADES 3- 7 SWIMMING
Our Junior School Swim Team is also off to a great start having completed our first week of practices. The team has about 40 athletes and are well coached by Ms. Romanko and Christine Lee (‘16). We also have an experienced crew of student coaches who bring out the best in our young Tigers. As always, the team has a very small window between our first practice and the first swim meet of the season. The Beth Heras Memorial Swim Meet is just around the corner on December 10th, and coaches are busy preparing the team. Go Tigers!
