Brian Tate Comes to YHS!

Brian Tate Workshop
Composer, choir director, and performer, Brian Tate, works with junior school students

Last Thursday, choir students in Grades 3-12 participated in a workshop with award-winning and internationally renowned composer, choir director, and performer, Brian Tate.

This workshop was in preparation for a rare and exciting performance opportunity at the Chan Centre Celebration of Community on Thursday, December 18.

Karen Roeck, Director of Choral Studies, initiated this collaborative project while planning for the Celebration of Community performance.

“Since this is York House’s 80th year celebration, I wanted to do something special that highlighted as many students as possible,” says Roeck. “Brian and I met through the BC Choral Musicianship Project in August. I was so inspired by his warm and gentle personality and his ability to connect with singers of every age.”

Brian attributes the success of his multifaceted career to a love of working with people and a passion for the arts. His passion for music of many kinds has led to a diverse career that includes orchestral and choral conducting and performing, musical theatre, and composing music for film, television, stage, and the concert hall. Brian has twice received Vancouver’s Jessie Richardson Award for original theatre music, and his choral music is performed worldwide.

“After researching Brian’s compositions, I discovered ‘We Are One.’ The lyrics of this piece is reflective of the values we teach the girls here at YHS and embodies our motto: ‘Not For Ourselves Alone.’”

Roeck and Music department colleagues Spencer Bach and Dawn Haylett taught the song to the Gr. 3-12 students during class time in preparation for the workshop with Tate. Watch a video clip from the workshop:

“The students were thrilled to work with Brian,” says Roeck. “They were very attentive and inspired by his direction. He was able to get them to sing with such feeling and emotion – there was a ‘buzz’ of excitement in the theatre all day. These girls were given such a rare opportunity to work with such a highly regarded and accomplished musician, and it was even more special to have Brian work with one of his own compositions.”

Roeck joined the YHS staff in 2010. Through her vision and leadership over the past 2 years, the Choral program has grown from 65 students in 3 ensembles to over 200 students in 6 ensembles.

“The Music room is a safe and fun place to be for the students. They get to experience rehearsals, festivals, and performances with their friends, old and new. Things like the Brian Tate workshop encourage the girls to be excited and passionate about singing, and in turn, they are eager to learn more about the art of choral music,” says Roeck.

Tate was impressed with the work ethic and vocal production displayed by all the students throughout the day. He is “so honoured” to have his piece performed by the YHS students, and is thrilled to be involved with the Celebration of Community performance.

YHS Sweeps Whistler Festival with 3 Golds

York House musicians had an amazing four days at the Whistler Music Festival (April 26-29, 2012), earning three Golds:

Una Voce – Gold
Bambina Vocal Jazz – Gold
Intermediate Band – Gold

Here are some comments from Sr. Music Director Mr. Bach:

The Grade 8/9 band had a tremendous performance in front of the largest crowd of the day. This was a new experience for many of the younger girls and they were stellar ambassadors for the music program. They should be very proud of their performance!

Mrs. Roeck had two classes representing YHS for the first time in both the Choral and Vocal Jazz categories since 2003. They were amazing. The professors were thrilled to work with both our “superior” choirs and had rave reviews for Karen’s conducting, rapport, and promise as a rising, young music director.  The kids, too, are thrilled with their work and are bouncing off the walls as I type this. Karen and I are so proud of our girls! Thanks for all your support.

The teacher chaperones also had some glowing words to say about YHS’s performance at the festival:

York House School is a community full of talented and hard-working people. Sometimes to gain perspective, it is necessary to step outside of our school walls to see ourselves with new eyes and to see our school as do. After having just returned from a weekend at the Music Festival, we felt compelled to share what we experienced watching our students perform and interact with other west coast students.

Over the course of the weekend, we were incredibly impressed and moved by the maturity, talent, commitment and passion of the YHS music department. Both the band and the choirs wowed their audiences, receiving accolades from judges and peers alike. One fellow band admitted that our students inspired them by setting the standard of what excellence looks and sounds like.  A judge stated that our choirs looked completely at home on the stage, and that they were ‘real’ as they sang from the heart.

As a community, we should be so very proud of our colleagues in the music department- Spencer, Karen and Dawn. Excellence does not happen by chance; it comes from hard work, perseverance, and outstanding leadership. This weekend made it abundantly clear that our music colleagues are leading with passion, challenging their students to expect the best from themselves and each other. The resulting three Gold standings is a testament to all of their hard work.  Congratulations to everyone involved in this outstanding weekend.

To close the festival, all of the participants come together to create two mass ensembles: a massed chorus and a massed band. The mass choir learned two songs ahead of time and one song on the day of. The mass band learned their music ahead of time. Both composers were also present.
