Junior Tigers Update: February 1, 2018

January is always an interesting month for our Junior School Athletics program. For our hard-working young athletes, a three-week break in the middle of an athletic season is both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, it provides an opportunity to recharge our batteries, on the other is inevitable that our games and skills will become a little rusty. Fortunately, our girls are keen and we jump right back into the fire of competition.

JUNIOR SCHOOL SWIM TEAM
The team put a couple of practices under their belt and then attended the St. George’s Elementary School Swim Meet on January 26th and 27th. This is our first of three major meets over the course of the next several weeks. It provided the team with an opportunity to test ourselves against that very tough opponent – the clock! Our team was highly successful in many individual and team swims with two highlights including winning the Grade 3 team category, and our own Ryan, Gr. 3, setting a new meet record in one of her swims. Way to go Tigers! Our next event is the WPGA Invitational Swim Meet on February 8th at Watermania (Richmond). Good luck Tigers!

JUNIOR SCHOOL BASKETBALL
All three of our Junior School teams have played multiple games over the past few weeks. Our Grade 5s played twice and Coach Kanavos and Coach Bird are very impressed with the girls progress. They noted that the girls always learn so much from their game experiences, and the following practices seem to see a jump in intensity! The Grade 6 team has also played twice and Coach Bester is very pleased with the improvement from the start of the year. Although “finishing” a scoring play is a challenge at this age, our girls are playing some good basketball, and the future of this team looks bright indeed. The Grade 7s played their final league game last week and being truthful, we are not winning any games. Still, our coaches are very proud of the team. The girls are working pretty hard, and they are having lots of fun! Their season will wrap up on February 21st at the ISEA Tournament. Best of luck to all teams over the final three weeks!

Senior Tigers Update: January 11, 2018

BASKETBALL UPDATE
Our Senior Tigers are off to a solid start with convincing wins over St. Pat’s 63-30, and Crofton House 71-27, as well as losses to provincially ranked teams, Little Flower Academy, and St. Thomas More. The Tigers are competing at Sir Winston Churchill Bulldog Tournament (January 10-11-12) and at the VGBA Tournament, hosted at Langara College (January 25-26-27). More information can be found at vgba.ca.

Our Junior Tigers (Gr. 9-10) are working and competing hard but are faced with a very strong Junior League this year as several independent teams in our league are provincially ranked and, many of our Gr. 10 (and one Gr. 9) students are already playing for our Senior Team. The Junior Tigers will be playing at the ISAs at YHS on January 19 & 20 and in the VGBA Tournament, hosted at Langara College January 25-26-27. More information can be found at vgba.ca.

Our Grade 8 Tigers are undefeated in league play with impressive wins over St. Pat’s 55-28, Crofton House 43-29, Little Flower, and St. Thomas More 45-18. The Gr. 8 Team will be competing at Seycove Secondary on January 20 and will be competing against Junior level teams at the Junior ISAs hosted by YHS on January 19 & 20.

SKI & SNOWBOARD UPDATE
The YHS ski and snowboard season is underway with races at Whistler-Blackcomb. Our team has posted excellent results in our first league meet in December. The Tigers placed 6 out of the first 10 finishers with Rosie (Gr. 11) placing 2nd, Olivia (Gr. 11) 4th, and Laura (Gr. 8) placing 7th.

Upcoming races at Whistler-Blackcomb are January 13, 19, and 25. If you are at Whistler those days, please come out to support the Tigers. Racings starts at either 10:00 am or 11:00 am on the GMC Course (Cougar Milk Run).
