Junior Tigers Update: October 3, 2019

VOLLEYBALL
Early last week, the Grade 7A team travelled to Crofton House (CHS) and played their first league game of the season. The result was not in their favour but a great deal was learned. In fact, motivated by that result, the team had an intense week of practice. The team then tested itself at the Dig It Tournament, hosted by St. John’s School. The girls are finding their inner Tiger and worked themselves into the final, where they once again faced CHS. Unfortunately, the result was the same, but this time the Tigers put the Falcons on notice…we are not going to be pushed over. This week the team travelled to Mulgrave and came home with their first league win of the season.

The Grade 7B team also traveled to CHS early last week and came away with a similar result. The girls have worked very hard at practice this past week and a half, and they are looking forward to their next league match on Thursday, October 3, at Southpointe Academy.

The Grade 6 team travelled to West Vancouver last Monday to play against Collingwood School. It was a fun trip highlighted by Collingwood’s incredible school spirit. The fans were loud and proud and it created quite a unique environment. The Grade 6 team plays again on Monday, October 8, at Stratford Hall.

The Grade 5 team had a very busy week playing twice (at Stratford Hall and St. John’s School) and practicing twice. The coaches have reported that the young Tigers have really taken to Atomic Tripleball (modified volleyball), showing tremendous promise and having a lot of fun along the way.

CROSS-COUNTRY RUNNING
The Tigers Cross-Country team participated in the Festival of Cross Country hosted by Ocean Athletics on September 28. Head Coach Lela Ling reported that the team did very well, and highlighted some spectacular sportsmanship displayed by our Grade 7 Head Girl, Kate. This Thursday, October 3, the team is competing in the WPGA Cross Country Festival. This is another race opportunity as the team continues building towards the ISEA Championship. Good luck Tigers!

Senior Tigers Update: October 3, 2019

JUNIOR TIGERS VOLLEYBALL WIN DOUGLAS COLLEGE TOURNAMENT
Our Junior Volleyball Team participated in the 24 teams Douglas College Junior Girls Tournament this past weekend and took home the tournament championship with a 2-1 win over Pinetree Secondary of Coquitlam. The Tigers were on fire defeating Heritage Woods and Handsworth in round-robin. On Saturday, their role continued beating Terry Fox, Little Flower Academy (LFA), and then Pinetree in the final. Congratulations to our Junior Tigers and their coaches, Jackson Liu, and Brianne Wager. Thank you to A. Yung (parent) for photos of the team.

GRADE 8 TIGERS VOLLEYBALL WIN SEAQUAM TOURNAMENT
Not to be outdone, our Grade 8 Volleyball Team travelled to Seaquam Secondary for a tournament this past weekend and cruised through the competition beating league rival, St. Pat’s, 2-0 to take home the championship. Congratulations to our girls and to Head Coach Mr. Bester and assistant, Sarah Promislow ‘11.

SENIOR FIELD HOCKEY TAKE SILVER AT UBC
Senior Tigers Field Hockey went four wins and two losses this past weekend at the UBC Tournament. The two losses were to Kits as the Tigers settled for silver in this tournament. Of course, the Senior Team is our Senior 2 team while the Kits squad is their top team, so it was a great result for our Senior Tigers!

Our Varsity Tigers Team battled against the best AA and AAA teams in BC and played well defeating Cowichan and Kelowna Secondary School (KSS) and losing hard-fought battles with Little Flower Academy (LFA), Collingwood, Handsworth.

YHS ATHLETICS COMMUNICATION POLICY
While our athletic program is committed to excellence and hard work to compete among the top teams in BC, education is our first priority. We are committed to growth and do what we can to encourage and challenge our student athletes to reach their athletic and personal potential.

One area we stress is communication. For student athletes in Grade 8 through to Grade 12, we encourage our student athletes to be the primary communicators with their teammates and coaches.

  • Encourage your daughter to be proactive with communication in any of the following areas:
  • Looking ahead at their schedules and informing a coach about any missed practices or games.
Questions about skill development (i.e. what I can improve?).
