The Junior and Senior A teams played in their respective provincial championships on the May 14, 15 weekend.
The Seniors played hard and, unfortunately, suffered a bit of a heart-breaking loss in the finals to Kits, placing second in the province overall. It was a particularly tough loss because the two teams had met in the finals at Cities and Spring Reign, a massive tournament in Washington, with YHS-Saints coming out on top both times. Kits was obviously hungry for redemption at Provincials and came out strong. The players fought hard and will, no doubt, use this as a learning experience for the future. They represented both schools very well, as always.
The Juniors also had a very successful weekend. For many, this was their first big tournament and had a great time competing against teams from all over BC. They finished 7th overall but, more importantly, came home with the coveted Spirit Award! This is a trophy awarded to the team who demonstrates the most sportsmanlike behaviour and team spirit throughout the tournament. It speaks to the kids’ positive attitudes and energy all season long. In a sport that is largely self-officiated (there are no referees in ultimate frisbee), the Spirit Award is highly regarded and a real honour to win.
