Congratulations to Ariel and Grace (Grade 9) on their participation in the Greater Vancouver Regional Science Fair (GVRSF) at UBC from April 7-9, 2016. Over the three days of the fair, these two students presented their projects and had the privilege of touring a research lab, in addition to many other activities. Ariel received a silver medal for her project “The Efficiencies of Natural Remedies Against Fungal Infections”, as well as the James International Microscope Award. Grace received an Honourable Mention for her project “Oil Absorptivity of Natural Sorbents”. Great work girls!
Many members of the YHS community came out to support the fair. Elizabeth, Grade 12, spoke at the awards ceremony about her experiences at three national level fairs in Grade 8, 10, and 11. She and Joy, Grade 12, also a past Canada-Wide Science Fair participant, dropped by to see all the projects and check in with the YHS participants (learn more about Elizabeth and Joy’s work here: CWSF 2013, GVRSF 2015, and CWSF 2014).
Kayla Lee ‘13 was a GVRSF judge and member of the Post-Secondary Seminar student panel. Kathleen Beekman ‘13 was also a judge, Marissa Lee ‘15 volunteered at the event, and Jessica Jiang ‘14 was the GVRSF organizing committee treasurer and head of student activities. Hear from Jessica on how the GVRSF has helped her in this short video.
Thank you to Ms. Matthews for all of her work behind the scenes supervising and assisting the girls during their project development and data collection, and thank you to Ms. Wong for helping the girls with their written reports and presentations. A huge thank you to Ms. Dombroski for inspiring our girls to love Science and participate in these incredible learning opportunities. She has been on the GVSRF organizing committee for the past 12 years. Thank you for your passion and support for this remarkable event.
