Junior Tigers Update: May 5, 2022

ATHLETICS EXPLAINED: MAY 19 at 8:45 am
At YHS, Athletics formally begins in Grade 3, and for many students, it continues all the way through Grade 12. Participating in sports is a wonderful opportunity to build physical literacy skills, self-efficacy, and independence. However, the beginning of the journey is not just for athletes, it is also the initial school athletic experience for parents. Naturally, this means questions and lots of them.

To help parents get a great start in Athletics, we are hosting an Athletics Explained Coffee Morning. We invite all Grade 2-5 parents who are interested. With the pandemic causing interruptions to school sports for the past two years, there may be many questions about a school athletic season.

Athletics Explained Coffee Morning: Grade 2-5

TRACK & FIELD
Yesterday, our Grade 3 athletes got into the swing of life in the fast lanes in the 60m sprint. It was all part of our Grade 3 Track & Field Mini Meet with our gracious hosts Crofton House School. Additional events included long jump, shot put, and a shuttle relay. Our Tigers were very excited and they should be very proud of their efforts. A big thank you to Aria B.’s parents who provided a sweet little treat post-meet.

ULTIMATE
Our Grade 5 and Grade 6/7 teams have continued to find growth and success on the ultimate pitch, with improved play every match. It is amazing to watch our Grade 7s in particular. They are fast and fierce and have learned so much since they were in Grade 5. We can’t wait to see the massive improvements our Grade 5s will have made by 2024!

Next Monday, May 9, both groups will be playing in the ISEA Ultimate Playday/Tournament. The squads will participate in several matches throughout the day, and promise to come home with smiling faces and tired legs. Good luck Tigers!

Senior Tigers Update: April 28, 2022

A BUSY SPRING FOR OUR TIGERS

VARSITY SOCCER UNDEFEATED IN LEAGUE PLAY AND 4TH AT ISA CHAMPIONSHIPS:
Our Varsity Soccer Team defeated CHS 2-1, WPGA 3-2, St Pat’s 6-0 and LFA 2-1 to remain undefeated in our LMISSAA league. As a result, York House will face off vs Notre Dame on Tuesday, May 3 at Trillium Turf at 3:30 pm for the LMISSAA Championship game.

Assured of a top 2 finish in league play means that the Tigers have advanced to the Vancouver Sea to Sky AA Zone Championships held May 10, 12, 17. There, they will compete against other top teams from the Vancouver public school league, North and West Vancouver leagues as well as Sunshine Coast and Howe Sound. The top 3 teams at zones will qualify for the AA BC Championships.

On April 22-23, the Tigers traveled to Victoria and St. Michael’s University School for the ISA Championships. Several key players were unable to attend this event but our Tigers performed well regardless, placing 4th. The Team had a great time on the field and enjoyed Victoria. Special thank you goes to our coaches Mr. Lum and Mr. Bucifal, as well as Ms. Harrigan who came along as a chaperone.

SENIOR SOCCER UPDATE:
Our Senior Soccer Team is a Junior aged team of players in Grade 8-9-10. This developmental team plays a limited schedule but has enjoyed two good games with a dramatic win over Crofton House and a 3-0 loss to a strong LFA squad. The Team is coached by Mr. Williams-Walshe and YHS alumnae, Gina O’Neill ‘15.

TIGERS TRACK & FIELD TEAM ENJOYING EXCELLENT RESULTS:
Our Senior Track & Field Team is excited to be competing at meets after a two-year layoff due to COVID. We are so fortunate to have such committed coaching from Mr. Jacob Emerson who oversees the program. He is joined by YHS alumnae and UBC Varsity athlete Ms. Olivia Uliana ‘20 and UBC Track Team member Ms. Jaxon Slaney.

Our Tigers compete at weekly league meets at Swangard Stadium in preparation for the LMISSAA Track Finals on May 4-5. Top performers at our League Final Meets will advance to a large Vancouver Sea to Sky Zone Championship Meet in mid-May.

YHS athletes have performed very well in a range of events and most notably, our Grade 9s dominating the 100m sprints at our most recent meet.

BADMINTON UPDATE:
Our Senior Badminton Team is playing weekly matches on Tuesdays here at YHS. Our young team is gaining a lot of experience and is building for the future. Last week, the team attended ISA Championships at Crofton House. While the team did not medal, they enjoyed a full day of competition against many other independent schools.

ULTIMATE UPDATE:
Our Junior and Senior Ultimate Teams are doing very well in league play and are preparing for our LMISSAA playoffs. More detailed updates on our Ultimate Teams will be coming soon.
