Senior Tigers Update: April 28, 2022

A BUSY SPRING FOR OUR TIGERS

VARSITY SOCCER UNDEFEATED IN LEAGUE PLAY AND 4TH AT ISA CHAMPIONSHIPS:
Our Varsity Soccer Team defeated CHS 2-1, WPGA 3-2, St Pat’s 6-0 and LFA 2-1 to remain undefeated in our LMISSAA league. As a result, York House will face off vs Notre Dame on Tuesday, May 3 at Trillium Turf at 3:30 pm for the LMISSAA Championship game.

Assured of a top 2 finish in league play means that the Tigers have advanced to the Vancouver Sea to Sky AA Zone Championships held May 10, 12, 17. There, they will compete against other top teams from the Vancouver public school league, North and West Vancouver leagues as well as Sunshine Coast and Howe Sound. The top 3 teams at zones will qualify for the AA BC Championships.

On April 22-23, the Tigers traveled to Victoria and St. Michael’s University School for the ISA Championships. Several key players were unable to attend this event but our Tigers performed well regardless, placing 4th. The Team had a great time on the field and enjoyed Victoria. Special thank you goes to our coaches Mr. Lum and Mr. Bucifal, as well as Ms. Harrigan who came along as a chaperone.

SENIOR SOCCER UPDATE:
Our Senior Soccer Team is a Junior aged team of players in Grade 8-9-10. This developmental team plays a limited schedule but has enjoyed two good games with a dramatic win over Crofton House and a 3-0 loss to a strong LFA squad. The Team is coached by Mr. Williams-Walshe and YHS alumnae, Gina O’Neill ‘15.

TIGERS TRACK & FIELD TEAM ENJOYING EXCELLENT RESULTS:
Our Senior Track & Field Team is excited to be competing at meets after a two-year layoff due to COVID. We are so fortunate to have such committed coaching from Mr. Jacob Emerson who oversees the program. He is joined by YHS alumnae and UBC Varsity athlete Ms. Olivia Uliana ‘20 and UBC Track Team member Ms. Jaxon Slaney.

Our Tigers compete at weekly league meets at Swangard Stadium in preparation for the LMISSAA Track Finals on May 4-5. Top performers at our League Final Meets will advance to a large Vancouver Sea to Sky Zone Championship Meet in mid-May.

YHS athletes have performed very well in a range of events and most notably, our Grade 9s dominating the 100m sprints at our most recent meet.

BADMINTON UPDATE:
Our Senior Badminton Team is playing weekly matches on Tuesdays here at YHS. Our young team is gaining a lot of experience and is building for the future. Last week, the team attended ISA Championships at Crofton House. While the team did not medal, they enjoyed a full day of competition against many other independent schools.

ULTIMATE UPDATE:
Our Junior and Senior Ultimate Teams are doing very well in league play and are preparing for our LMISSAA playoffs. More detailed updates on our Ultimate Teams will be coming soon.

Junior Tigers Update: April 28, 2022

TRACK & FIELD:
Spring Break truly is the calm before the storm when it comes to JS Athletics. Of course, we are always busy, yet it seems like the “track season” takes us to a whole new level of excitement. With nearly 100 students on a single team, and each of those students participating in six training sessions, we have to be on top of our organizational game. As always, the hard work pays off. Last weekend (April 22, 23) the Tigers participated in their first track meet since 2019, the Vancouver Olympic Club Elementary Track & Field Meet. For the Grade 3, 4, and 5 Tigers, this was their first-ever track meet in a YHS singlet. The Tigers posted, literally, dozens of personal best achievements, and there were many excellent performances that also resulted in top 3 (medal) finishes. One athlete, Jaime, Grade 7, even set a new school record in the 800m. Jaime’s time of 2:35.99 broke a record that had stood since 2005 (Roya Assadi ‘10). Congratulations to all of the Tigers!

On Wednesday, April 27, the Grade 5, 6, and 7 Tigers competed in the Vancouver Elementary School Track & Field Championships at UBC. Results were not available at press time, but you can be sure there were many personal bests, and some very proud coaches.

ULTIMATE:
The always popular sport of ultimate is flying along once again here at York House School. This year, we decided to divide our participants into two teams, Grade 5 and Grade 6/7. Both teams participated in league games on April 19. Results are not kept from the league games, yet they offer our Tigers a chance to test themselves against some highly skilled teams. The Grade 5 team found out very quickly that you had better come prepared to sprint and compete for the space. Although their initial experience was abrupt, the Tigers were quick to adjust and they now have a sense that you will play like you practice. With a large roster of 38, our Grade 6/7 team is embracing the ‘hockey’ mentality of sprinting and working very hard in short bursts, only to have an appropriate rest while your teammates take over. The Tigers are pushing their skills and strategies to new levels, and proving to be one of the best YHS teams we have seen at this level.

The regular season games will continue each week, with the ISEA Playday on May 9, and the SabreFest tournament on June 3. Go Tigers Go!
