Junior Tigers Update: March 1, 2018

At York House, the end of February signals the end of our winter (Term 2) Athletics. Over the past two weeks, all four of our Junior School teams have concluded their seasons with an ISEA event. The first two weeks of March and the activities of Spring Break give our students and teachers, our athletes and coaches, a chance to catch their breath before we make a push towards the end of the school year. Following Spring Break, we move into Track & Field and the always exciting Ultimate season. Go Tigers Go!

JUNIOR SCHOOL SWIM TEAM
After many early morning practices, the team finally arrived at the ISEA Swimming Championships. The team was very excited and once again performed admirably with many of our relay teams finishing in the top 3! As well, we had several girls finish with enough points to be ranked in the overall top 10 in their grade level. Congratulations to Ryan and Shyloh (Grade 3), Lauren (Grade 4), Angela (Grade 5), and Madeleine (Grade 6). Between the excellent relays and the fine individual performances, York House was able to finish the meet as the third ranked team on the girls’ side of the competition (Grades 3 – 7). Way to go girls!!!

Of course, none of this is possible without the guidance of our outstanding coaches. We must say a big THANK YOU to Charmalee Kirk, Vicky Rhodes, Christine Lee (‘16), and Cody Harvey. As well, we have a great tradition of having current Senior School students join the coaching ranks, so we must also thank Sophia (Grade 10), Victoria  (Grade 10), Devon (Grade 9) and Kaitlin (Grade 8).

JUNIOR SCHOOL BASKETBALL
The Grade 5 and 6 Basketball teams wrapped up their seasons at their respective ISEA Basketball Playdays. On February 15th, Mulgrave played host to 23 Grade 5 teams from 12 different schools, while the Grade 6 Playday took place at the Richmond Olympic Oval where 14 teams participated from 10 different schools. As always, participation at YHS was strong. In fact, the Tigers were able to once again put multiple teams on the courts at both playdays. All of our coaches reported that the Tigers played with determination and enthusiasm, and the level of improvement was notable. Congratulations to all of the girls.

When the girls move to up to Grade 7, there is a noticeable jump in competition as the ISEA format shifts from a playday to a tournament. This year, our team travelled to Meadowridge School to play in the ISEA Tournament on February 21st. We competed in two thrilling games, the first of which went in to double overtime! Although they had a couple of chances to win both games, the Tigers came up a touch short on the scoreboard. This year’s Grade 7s had a lot of fun and were a lot of fun to coach. They were game to play anyone and they brought an unwavering energy that was always accompanied by huge smiles, no matter what the score or outcome of the game. Thank you, girls!

Congratulations to all of our players and coaches for another successful basketball season. A special thank you to our dedicated coaches:
